The 700 QuiltThe Poldrate Quilters were delighted to be asked to take part in the ‘Haddington 700’ celebrations for the anniversary of the oldest document in the town’s archives, the royal charter signed by Robert the Bruce in 1318. Our contribution was the creation of a decorative wall-hanging for the main room of the John Gray Centre, which houses Haddington’s Library and Museum as well as the Archive.
The design of the quilt represents several brightly-coloured copies of the original document. Members of the Poldrate Quilters were given one piece of fabric as a colour sample, and then sourced the fabrics for the rest of their charter block from their own stash or by swapping with other members. Each block is a different colour of the rainbow - apart from the beige one representing the real charter. The quilt was specifically designed to contain exactly 700 pieces of fabric: 41 rectangular ‘charter’ blocks made up of 15 squares = 615 plus 41 ‘ribbon’ tails = 656 plus 4 extra tails in the top row = 660 plus 8 white fillers at the edges of 5 pieces each = 700!
