The Trinity Project
Extensive renovations in 2004-5 turned the shabby old church hall of Holy Trinity Church, in Church Street Haddington, into the bright new Trinity Centre. The Poldrate Quilters were approached at the end of 2005 to create a series of wall hangings to decorate the end wall of the main hall, above the mirrors for dance classes. These would ideally have some spiritual dimension (but not be overtly Christian, since the hall is used by the whole community), and also help to soften the acoustics. Our only brief was "a local connection would be nice".
The design is an idealised landscape of the sea and hills of East Lothian, split up into 21 individual scroll-shaped hangings. Each member of the Poldrate Quilters taking part was responsible for her own panel start to finish, using her own fabrics and whatever techniques and embellishments she liked. The hangings are unified by the lines of the landscapeflowing across and between the panels, and a controlled colour palette.
The Trinity Project was displayed at the Scottish Quilt Championships at Ingliston at the end of Setember 2006, where it was awarded 1st place for Group Quilts and a Judge's Choice Commendation. The hangings were dedicated during a special service on 22nd October 2006.
The Trinity Project was entered for the Saltire Society’s Arts & Crafts in Architecture Awards 2007. Although it did not receive an award, it was chosen for an ‘honourable mention’ during the awards ceremony. The Poldrate Quilters were delighted by this recognition of their work in a prestigious national competition. It was particularly gratifying because our work was judged alongside entries from professional artists, architects and designers, who were able to work with budgets many times larger than ours.
